Another successful groundbreaking was held by Portage Public Schools, this time at the site of the current and future Haverhill Elementary.
To begin the festivities, Cub Scout Pack 286 led the group of Haverhill students, parents, staff, and community members in the Pledge of Allegiance. The guests also enjoyed a song from the Haverhill student choir.
Speakers Superindent Mark Bielang, School Board President Randy Van Antwerp, Director of Elementary Education Kelly Jesenisus, and Principal Jeremy Zonts spoke about the benefits a new elementary will bring, including flexible learning spaces allowing collaboration and project-based learning. Haverhill students and staff were especially excited to hear they would only have to spend two more school years without air conditioning! Fielding International Senior Design Architect Justen Dippel described how the design for the new elementary school was collaborated on by many members of the Haverhill community, including students. He also shared that the design drew inspiration from the surrounding trees, as well as the neighboring Haverhill Park.
And of course, no groundbreaking would be complete without...breaking ground! Portage Public School officials, students, and Portage community members picked up their shovels and got the construction process officially underway.
